From August 22 to September 9 2004, fifteen Indigenous practitioners from across Australia met in Brisbane for the Indigenous New Media Lab. The Lab provided an engaging learning environment in digital media and new media arts skills. Staged at QANTM in Brisbane City, the sessions ran for two and a half weeks and featured workshops in computer graphics, web design, video editing, video production and sound design.
In addition to specialist tutors, guest speakers included leading New Zealand visual artist Lisa Reihana and acclaimed projection artist Craig Walsh, both visiting the lab to discuss a range of topics and provide hands-on workshops.
The Lab provided a unique opportunity for Indigenous practitioners to learn new skills as well as network and exchange skills and ideas with each other. The participants were selected from a ‘call for proposals’ and flew in from all over Australia. Highlights of the outcome of this new media lab program were seen in the showcase event titled binnung woolah dahgo: listen talking together at QUT Kelvin Grove, with speeches from Aunty Val Coolwell and artist Leah King-Smith.
This project was assisted by the Australian Government through the New Media Arts Board and the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Arts Board of the Australia Council, its arts funding and advisory body, the Australian Film Commission, Arts SA, Arts Queensland and Arts NT. Additional support has been provided to participants by Arts Tasmania and Arts WA. ANAT is assisted by the Australia Council and by the South Australian Government through Arts SA. Artworkers is funded by the Queensland Government through Arts Queensland.
