Rapid changes in electronic communication systems, ways of interfacing, responding to ideas and disseminating information necessitates that new forms and genres of writing are invented.

From 14 August through mid October 1998, ANAT has commissioned a joint initiative with the Adelaide based Electronic Writing and Research Ensemble, and supported by the Australia Council's New Media Arts Fund, for Perth based writer Josephine Wilson and Brisbane writer Linda Carroli to undertake 'virtual' residencies simultaneously.

The intention is that the writers will work collaboratively via the internet to produce work hyper textually. The texts may be fiction, theory or a hybrid; the exploration this medium is ideal for creating truly cross disciplinary work.

The writers/artists work at their own location and are therefore in-residence virtually. The Perth Institute for Contemporary Art and the Institute of Modern Art in Brisbane are providing the writers with computer and internet access and the environment from which to work.

The work produced during the residencies will be published on the Electronic Writing and Research Ensemble's web site during the course of the residencies as "work in progress".
