Two years in the planning and ten years of development, seismic artist DV Rogers is soon to begin installing an earthquake shake table on the San Andreas Fault. The excavation of a trench in which this kinetic earthwork will take place begins 2nd of June 2008.
Parkfield Interventional EQ Fieldwork (PIEQF) is a geologically interactive, kinetic earthwork designed for the township of Parkfield, Central California. Between 28th June and 28th September 2008 this machine controlled earthwork converges all USGS reported Californian earthquake data with real-time control of a hydraulically actuated earthquake simulator. Parkfield is located 190 miles south of San Francisco, and 210 miles north of Los Angeles. Parkfield is also known as the earthquake monitoring capital of seismology.

This example of seismic art is a feedback loop between the seismicity of California and a physical and mechanical representation of all Californian seismic events that occur during the 93 days of intervention. Each time an earthquake occurs, an array of 1/2 inch and 5/8 inch steel rods attached to the earthquake shake table will oscillate and resonate, reflecting the dynamic nature of California.
The PIEQF is short of funds to be realised. The intervention needs to raise $10,000 USD asap to acquire crucial equipment, materials and pay for services to realise this unique machine driven earthwork.
For details on how to make a donation and assist with the realisation
of this dynamic earth reflection system please check out the project blog.
